<div>The Micromentalists are an art collective originally based out of Chicago. The general philosophy of the group is that art need not be "monumental" in scale to be important. The group was created in 2006 by the late painter, sequential artist, and Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago Animation Professor, Patrick W. Welch. The show will feature work by founding members <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_W._Welch">Patrick Welch</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Drummond">Bill Drummond</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Keene">Steve Keene</a>, <a href="http://www.fecalface.com/SF/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1433">Paul Nudd</a>, <a href="http://rogueparlour.com/section/78513_Jimmy_Utah_Peterson.html">James Peterson</a>, and <a href="http://ps1.org/studio-visit/artist/eric-doeringer">Eric Doeringer</a>. Additionally, James Peterson will be taking tattoo appointm
ents on Friday, September 3rd, before Art Walk, and also on Saturday, September 4th, as a guest artist at HOWL Gallery/Tattoo.<br />

<em>Art movements don’t come around very often. It’s been 40 years since the Hairy Who put Chicago on the art-world map. Now there’s a new art movement, complete with a manifesto full of bluster and pseudo-Marxist rhetoric, they’re called the Micromentalists. They reject the idea of monumental art in museums and commercial galleries. They think art should be small and affordable but still challenging, and hanging in EVERYONE’S home.<br />
<br />
Micromentalists founder Patrick W. Welch, best known for his “miniature hate paintings,” has assembled an extraordinary group of like-minded artists to launch the movement.  There’s Bill Drummond, the man who once burnt 1,000,000 pounds sterling, Steve Keene the self-proclaimed “most prolific artist in America,” and Brooklyn enfant terrible Eric Doeringer whose bootlegsâcopies of modern mastersâare sold from his table on the streets of Chelsea daily.<br />

Work will range from Smoov Brainz and Grave Dubz’s tiny collaborative paintings, Paul Nudd’s strange little blobby doodles, to 20,000ths of a Richard Long photograph, which Drummond is offering incrementally for a few dollars each.<br />

<div>The late founder of Micromentalism, Patrick Welch, was also a professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design during the years that HOWL Gallery Co-Owner, Andy Howl, attended the school.  Andy was in talks with Patrick to do this show around the time of his death, and this show is dedicated in his memory.  The Micromentalists are now coordinated by James Peterson, MFA The School of the Art Inisitute of Chicago and currently a tattoo artist at Rogue Parlour Tattoo in Arizona.  James will be in attendance during the Opening Reception and is now taking tattoo appointments for Friday September 3rd during the day and Saturday September 4th. See below for tattoo photos and appointment information.<br />

<div>The Micromentalists are an art collective originally based out of Chicago. The general philosophy of the group is that art need not be "monumental" in scale to be important. The group was created in 2006 by the late painter, sequential artist, and Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago Animation Professor, Patrick W. Welch. The show will feature work by founding members Patrick Welch, Bill Drummond, Steve Keene, Paul Nudd, James Peterson, and Eric Doeringer. Additionally, James Peterson will be taking tattoo appointments on Friday, September 3rd, before Art Walk, and also on Saturday, September 4th, as a guest artist at HOWL Gallery/Tattoo.</div>
<div>Â </div>
<div>The late founder of Micromentalism, Patrick Welch, was also a professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design during the years that HOWL Gallery Co-Owner, Andy Howl, attended the school. Along with the other Micromentalistsâ works, the show will feature photos, biography information, and art by Mr. Welch. He died unexpectedly in 2008. </div>

<div>An Opening Reception will be held on Friday, September 3rd, in conjunction with Fort Myers Art Walk from 6-10pm. Light refreshments provided. Live music by Cosmic Mountain on the HOWL back patio from 8-10pm. Exhibit continues through September 29th. </div>

<p><strong>AS FEATURED ON NPR GULF COAST LIVE ARTS EDITION AND THE COVER OF NEWS-PRESS GULF COASTING THIS MONTH.</strong></p>
<p><strong>HOWL Gallery presents</strong> the all-female comic art collaborative known as the SUGAR NINJAS. Created and published by Bob Pendarvis, the SUGAR NINJAS are a diverse group of talented women artists and storytellers. A former professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Bob Pendarvis taught the school's first comics art class and went on to create and co-found the their Sequential Art BFA and MFA degree programs. He is assisted by Emma Ravenel and Gally Articola in producing the two book anthology which showcases the collective's works. The two books vary greatly in content, with SUGAR NINJAS: SWEET featuring works that are cute and suitable for all ages, while SUGAR NINJAS: SPICY includes edgy and adult subject matter. <br />
<br />
The comics industry has historically been a male-dominated field and the SUGAR NINJAS strive to promote the often overlooked and underestimated female talent currently producing creative works.<br />
<br />
The exhibition highlights a selection of artwork produced by over two dozen of the SUGAR NINJAS, including comic book pages, comic strips, Dollfie photo comics, picture book illustrations, and more. Some of the artists appearing in the anthology currently work for companies such as Tokyo Pop and Marvel Comics. Volume 2 of SUGAR NINJAS featuring all new work in the Sweet and Spicy two book format available now at HOWL. </p>
<p>Exhibit continues through August 31st. </p>

<p><strong>SUGAR NINJAS OPENS THIS FRIDAY!</strong> AUGUST 6TH 6-10PM</p>
<p><strong>HOWL Gallery presents</strong> the all-female comic art collaborative known as the SUGAR NINJAS. Created and published by Bob Pendarvis, the SUGAR NINJAS are a diverse group of talented women artists and storytellers. A former professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Bob Pendarvis taught the school's first comics art class and went on to create and co-found the their Sequential Art BFA and MFA degree programs. He is assisted by Emma Ravenel and Gally Articola in producing the two book anthology which showcases the collective's works. The two books vary greatly in content, with SUGAR NINJAS: SWEET featuring works that are cute and suitable for all ages, while SUGAR NINJAS: SPICY includes edgy and adult subject matter. <br />
<br />
The comics industry has historically been a male-dominated field and the SUGAR NINJAS strive to promote the often overlooked and underestimated female talent currently producing creative works.<br />
<br />
The exhibition highlights a selection of artwork produced by over two dozen of the SUGAR NINJAS, including comic book pages, comic strips, Dollfie photo comics, picture book illustrations, and more. Some of the artists appearing in the anthology currently work for companies such as Tokyo Pop and Marvel Comics. Volume 2 of SUGAR NINJAS featuring all new work in the Sweet and Spicy two book format is currently being printed and is set to DEBUT at HOWL during the reception. The show will also feature a sneak peek at Bob's upcoming graphic novel, A GIRL CALLED ANA TEACHES KITTENS HOW TO DRAW. <br />
<br />
An Opening Reception will be held on Friday, August 6th, in conjunction with Fort Myers Art Walk from 6-10pm. Light refreshments provided. Exhibit continues through August 31st. </p>

<p>OPENING RECEPTION JULY 2 DURING FORT MYERS ART WALK</p>
<p>HOWL Gallery presents their "SWFL Lives!" 2nd Annual Group Show, which showcases some of the best artists living in Southwest Florida. Many entries were submitted, but only the best were juried into the exhibit. The show will feature paintings, photography, sculptures, along with unique fine art installations. Some of the artists include Matt Lackey, Erin Heffron, Steve Luongo, Karin Dahlstrom, Troy Thomas, Chris Carver, David Hammel, and Lennie Jones. Awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place will determined by Peopleâs Choice voting during the opening reception. </p>
<p>The opening reception will be held July 2, from 6-10pm and include live music by Cosmic Mountain at 8pm on the HOWL back patio. An additional daytime reception will be held on Saturday, July 3, from 12-4pm. The exhibit continues through July 31.</p>
